Holders of NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technical membership (Tech IOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH – and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM –


Units IGC1 and GC2 are taught units each assessed by one two-hour written examination. Each written examination consists of ten 'short-answer' questions and one 'long-answer' question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH. Pass mark for IGC 1 and GC 2 is 45%. Unit GC3 is assessed by one two-hour practical examination. This is held on a date set by Safeguard and must be taken within 14 days of a written examination. The practical examination is internally assessed by Safeguard and externally moderated by NEBOSH. Pass mark for GC 3 is 60%.


All delegates who successfully complete all 3 units will receive 4 certificates from the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. Those who are referred in any of the unit(s) will receive certificate(s) for the unit(s) they passed only and have opportunity to rewrite the referred unit subsequently. Once a candidate has achieved a Pass in all three units and the qualification grade awarded they are normally considered to have completed the qualification. Result declaration is made within 40 working days of the date the examination. The certificates are issued within 40 working days of the result declaration date.
